Kirkjufell (Church Mountain)
This is Kirkjufell, one of the most famous mountains in Iceland. It is situated on the coast of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, near Grundarfjörður, a small village in western Iceland of about 900 residents. It may also be the most photogenic mountain in Iceland as it can be photographed from many different angles. This is not the most popular view of Kirkjufell, but I love it though as the symmetry of the landscape is almost perfect.
Sólfar - The Sun Voyager
Sun Voyager - a steel sculpture by Jon Gunnar Arnason resembling a Viking ship, but is in fact an ode to the sun.
Once the plug of a volcano, Hvitserkur rises nearly 50 feet from the sea. Over the years the craters surrounding the rock plug gave way to the pounding Atlantic Ocean leaving only this unusual outcropping behind. According to Icelandic legend, the rock was a troll who forgot to retreat from the light and was turned to stone in the sunrise. From this angle it resembles a rhinocerious drinking from the water.
